EuroVelo 12: North Sea Cycle Route – Norway

Norway’s slice of EV12 hugs the coast between the Swedish border and Bergen, stringing together fjords, sandy beaches, islands, and classic harbor towns. Think Oslo’s waterfront, the sun-soaked Skagerrak around Kristiansand, the big North Sea views near Jæren and Stavanger, and the dramatic west coast on the run toward Bergen.

Riding is mostly on asphalt with a few gravel bits, mixing dedicated cycleways with coastal roads. It’s “sea-level” on paper, but the ups and downs add up—expect constant rolling terrain. Traffic varies: quiet stretches in the countryside, busier sections near cities and ferry ports.

This route leans into ferries (fun, and very much part of the adventure), so check timetables, especially outside summer. You’ll also meet the odd tunnel—carry lights and follow local signage for bike detours. Wind can be a factor; pack layers and be ready for quick weather changes.

Look for EV12 signs and Norway’s National Cycle Route 1 markers. Best season is late spring to early autumn when days are long and services are open. Between fishing villages, lighthouses, skerries, and that endless coastline, this is a relaxed, scenic way to experience Norway by bike—one ferry hop and fjord view at a time.
