A collection of 5 cycling routes.

Overview

About this collection

From the Loire highlands to the Rhône valley, Via Fluvia is a relaxed, mostly car-free ride across Auvergne–Rhône-Alpes. It strings together smooth greenways, rail-trail sections, and quiet country roads, with a few short links on busier streets. Expect mainly asphalt with some gravel bits—touring bikes and e-bikes are perfect; 35–40 mm tires make the unpaved sections easy. Highlights along the way include the volcanic landscapes around Le Puy-en-Velay, the upper Loire gorges, Monts du Pilat, and Annonay (home of the Montgolfier hot-air balloon). You’ll cross old viaducts, pass through short tunnels (bring lights), and roll through small towns for coffee stops and bakeries. It’s well signposted, family-friendly on the fully paved stretches, and fun in either direction. The route connects with the ViaRhôna on the Rhône, making it a handy link for longer tours. Weather shifts quickly in the highlands, so pack a layer and water, and enjoy a river-to-river ride that stays scenic without getting too technical.
