Rhône Cycle Route (EuroVelo 17)

Follow the Rhône from the Swiss Alps to the Mediterranean. This collection links Switzerland’s Rhone-Route 1 with France’s ViaRhôna, rolling past glaciers, Lake Geneva, vineyards, Lyon, Roman towns, Provence, the Camargue, and finally the sea. It’s mostly on paved cycleways and quiet roads, with a few short gravel or on-road bits.

The gradients are gentle along the river, so it’s great for all levels. Do watch for the Mistral in the south—it can be a helpful tailwind or a headwind workout. Waymarking is solid: national signs in Switzerland and “ViaRhôna / EV17” in France.

Ride a weekend slice or go end-to-end. Big rail hubs like Brig, Geneva, Lyon, Avignon, and Arles make planning easy, and there’s no shortage of cafés, water stops, campsites, and hotels. Expect family‑friendly riverside paths, canal sections, and the occasional urban stretch.

Highlights: the Rhône glacier, lakeside promenades, Valais and Côtes du Rhône vineyards, UNESCO‑listed Lyon, lavender country, flamingos in the Camargue, and a sunset finish on the Med. Best from spring to autumn.
