WWI Front Route 1914–1918

Frontroute 14-18

WWI Front Route 1914–1918

A collection of 4 cycling routes.

Overview

About this collection

A relaxed cycling collection tracing the old Western Front, mixing peaceful country lanes with signed cycleways and a few easy gravel bits. Think fields, canals, small towns, and plenty of places to pause at memorials and cemeteries from 1914–18.

Surfaces are mostly paved, with short stretches of gravel and the odd cobble. Waytypes lean heavily toward quiet roads and cycle paths, with only brief busy patches. Climbing is mild overall, so it suits touring bikes and anyone comfortable with longer spins. 28 mm+ tires keep the mixed sections comfy.

Expect a ride that blends fresh air and history: low traffic, wide views, and lots of chances to stop for a coffee or a museum visit. Please be respectful around remembrance sites.

Good to know:

  • Wind can be a factor in open areas—check the forecast.
  • Pack basic spares for the gravel/track bits.
  • Lights help for shaded paths and early finishes.

If you’re after a meaningful route with easygoing riding and historic highlights, this one delivers.
