LF Waterlinieroute (Dutch Waterline Route)

Ride the LF Waterlinieroute, a long‑distance tour tracing the historic Dutch Water Defence Lines. Expect a string of forts, dikes, sluices, polders, and canals, plus plenty of small towns for coffee stops. Parts of the line are UNESCO‑listed, so you get scenery and history in one go.

The riding is mellow: mostly smooth asphalt and other paved surfaces, with the odd cobbled lane or short gravel patch. The route sticks to low‑traffic roads and dedicated cycleways almost end to end, with only brief bits on busier roads.

It’s mostly flat (this is the Netherlands), but the wind can add some spice. Easy to ride in either direction and simple to split into day stages—this collection groups the route into manageable sections, and trains and services are never far away.

Great for a relaxed multi‑day tour, or dip into a single stage for a fort‑to‑fort day ride. Check opening times if you want to visit forts or museums, and bring a lock for stops by the water.
