Mittelland Route

Swiss Mittelland Cycle Route

A collection of 25 cycling routes.

Overview

About this collection

A classic cross‑Switzerland ride across the gentle Swiss Plateau. It links the lakes in the east and west, rolling through farmland, riversides, vineyards, and historic towns—not high passes, but plenty of easy ups and downs.

The surface is mostly paved with long stretches of smooth asphalt, plus some gravel and farm tracks sprinkled in. Expect a mix of quiet roads, signed cycle paths, and the odd busy road section through towns. A touring bike with 32–40 mm tires or a gravel bike is perfect.

It’s well signposted, easy to split into day stages, and never far from train stations, so bailing or shortening a day is simple. Plan for a substantial total climb over the whole route, but gradients are generally friendly.

Best from spring to autumn. Ride it east→west or the other way—either direction delivers lake views, mellow countryside, and great coffee stops along the way.
