A collection of 20 cycling routes.

Overview

About this collection

The Main Cycle Path follows the river across Franconia and Hesse to its mouth in Mainz. Mostly close to the shore, well signposted and predominantly paved, with short sections on gravel or cobblestones. The profile is mainly flat – ideal for relaxed touring, even with luggage or family.

Along the way, you will encounter half-timbered towns and wine villages: Bamberg (UNESCO), Würzburg with its residence and vineyards, Wertheim, Miltenberg and Aschaffenburg. Later comes the skyline view in Frankfurt, and for the finale, the Rhine atmosphere in Mainz.

You cycle on bike paths, riverside paths and quiet side roads; major roads are rarely touched. Train stations are close to the route, making stages flexibly planable. There are plenty of places to stop – from beer gardens to wine taverns.

Tip: A trekking or touring bike fits perfectly; slightly wider tires make the few gravel and cobblestone sections more comfortable. Whether you start from the sources in Upper Franconia or set off at the Rhine, the Main Cycle Path is a relaxed multi-day loop with lots of culture, river views and enjoyment.
