Rum Runners Trail

Rum Runners Trail (Nova Scotia, Canada)

A collection of 8 cycling routes.

Overview

About this collection

A classic rail-trail linking Halifax to Lunenburg on Nova Scotia's South Shore. Expect mostly gravel and packed dirt, gentle grades, and long car-free stretches through woods and along inlets. The route strings together signed cycleways and rail bed with short links on quiet roads, with only a few brief busy crossings.

It is about 115-120 km end to end, so doable in a big day or split into two. Towns like Hubbards, Chester, and Mahone Bay make easy pit stops for food and water. A gravel or touring bike is ideal; 35 mm+ tires keep it comfy on the loose stuff. Watch for unpaved sections, occasional rough patches, and multi-use traffic.

Highlights include coastal views, old bridges, and small beaches just off the trail. Wayfinding is straightforward with consistent signage. Carry lights for the road bits and take care at crossings. A relaxed, scenic point-to-point ride on mostly traffic-free paths, great for riders of most levels.
