Overview

About this collection

The Saale Cycle Route follows the Saale River from its source in the Fichtel Mountains to the Elbe – always through the Saale Valley. You'll roll past reservoirs and rocks in the upper reaches, later through the Saale-Unstrut wine region and vast floodplains. Towns like Hof, Saalfeld, Jena, Naumburg and Halle lie directly on the route – perfect for coffee, culture and short stops.

The surface is mostly asphalt, with sections of fine gravel, short cobblestone parts and quiet roads. Many stretches run along riverbank paths, farm roads and dedicated cycle paths – relaxed cycling, mostly flat along the river. In the upper Saale Valley, there are a few undulations and short climbs.

Ideal for multi-day tours or easy stages. Bikepacking works great; families will find many flat sections. Larger towns offer good rail connections and accommodations. Tip: In Saale-Unstrut, it’s worth stopping at the wineries.

Note: After rain, unpaved sections can be slippery. In towns, be cautious on busier stretches.
