Black Gold - Experience the Journey of Coal

Schwarzes Gold – Kohle-Radwege

A collection of 4 cycling routes.

Overview

About this collection

This collection takes you cycling along the traces of the 'black gold'. The routes connect sites of mining history and show how the landscape and places were shaped by coal mining. The surface is mixed: lots of asphalt, plus long gravel sections and short stretches of loose stones. Mostly you will ride on cycle paths and quiet roads, with very short segments on main roads. There are also some trail sections and occasional passages through pedestrian areas – please ride slowly or push briefly there. The elevation gain is moderate, partly gently hilly. Trekking or gravel bikes are ideal; road bikes can be used with caution. Depending on the section, you will encounter typical mining traces such as spoil heaps, old extraction facilities, or former mines – good spots for breaks and photos. Tip: pack puncture protection and lights due to changing surfaces. The tours are relaxed as half-day to full-day rides. Signage may vary; an up-to-date GPS track helps. Enjoy exploring the coal heritage on two wheels!
