Great North Trail

A collection of 28 cycling routes.

Overview

About this collection

A long-distance, mostly off-road cycling collection linking gravel, tracks, and quiet lanes. Expect lots of unpaved riding, with big chunks of gravel and farm/forest tracks, plus cycleways. There are short links on busier roads and through pedestrian areas, a few steps, cobbles, mud, and loose gravel—so it’s adventure territory, not a skinny-tyre cruise. There’s plenty of climbing across the whole set, so low gears help.

Build your ride your way: pick a section for a weekend or string it all together. Best on a gravel or mountain bike with sturdy tires. Pack lights and wet-weather layers, and plan food and water between towns—some stretches feel pretty remote. Check local access and any seasonal restrictions, and be courteous on shared paths.

Highlights? Quiet backroads, big variety under your wheels, and a rewarding challenge for riders who love mixed-terrain exploration.
