EuroVelo 1 Spain: Atlantic Coast

A collection of 48 cycling routes.

Overview

About this collection

Spain’s slice of EuroVelo 1 follows the Atlantic and Bay of Biscay coast across the Basque Country, Cantabria, Asturias, and Galicia. Expect rugged cliffs, long beaches, estuaries, and plenty of green hills and fishing towns.

The riding is mixed. You’ll roll over lots of gravel and farm tracks, quiet back roads, some dedicated cycleways, and the odd busy link into towns. Wider tires help. It’s far from flat—steady climbs and punchy ramps stack up, with rewarding descents and big sea views.

Best tackled as a multi-day tour. Summer brings long days and warmer temps; spring and autumn are cooler and often wet—pack a solid rain layer and lights. Services are regular along the coast, with campsites, guesthouses, cafes, and great local food (seafood, cider, pintxos).

Why ride it?

  • Wild coastline and wide-open ocean views
  • Constant terrain variety to keep things interesting
  • Authentic northern Spain vibes away from the big crowds

Good to know: surfaces lean heavily toward gravel/track with significant unpaved sections alongside long paved stretches. There are a few busier road links—ride defensively and use local signed alternatives when available.

If you’re into coastal touring with real terrain and tons of scenery, this Spanish section of EV1 delivers.
