Deutsche Fährstraße – Radroute

The German Ferry Route – cycling route takes you from Bremervörde on the Oste, across the Elbe to the Kiel Canal, and onward to Kiel. Theme: ferries, bridges, locks – you roll from one hydraulic structure to the next. Highlights: the transporter bridge ferry in Osten, the locks in Brunsbüttel and Kiel, the views from the high bridges at Rendsburg, and of course, ship spotting along the canal.

The profile is flat, typical of northern Germany, with mostly asphalt surfaces that are easy to ride; occasionally there are sections with cobblestones, gravel, or quiet farm roads. Short stretches on busier roads occur. Allow time for ferry crossings (e.g., on the Elbe) – they are part of the experience here.

Perfect for a relaxed multi-day tour with luggage. Spring to autumn is the best time, the wind can either be your friend or foe. You’ll find places to stop for refreshments in the small marsh and canal villages almost everywhere. Tip: pack a camera or binoculars – big ships pass surprisingly close alongside the canal.
