I used the alternate route (6A in the book). It was more technical, had very few people and shaded. It was very dry in Sept, but I can see that it would be a muddy mess during wet season.

When I detoured off I ended up going way back down what I had already climbed to then start the ascent saga fun over the pass. The road was mostly empty and it was a long incline. The descent on a great road was very enjoyable.

Camino 4: Pamplona to Uterga around Alto del Perdon
Cycling route in Barañáin, Navarre, Spain
This is a good diversion off the Camino for bikes. It was still a road climb to the pass, but a better alternative than sharing a steep and very narrow track. Saddle bags would be bumped and passing walkers would be very hard.
Join back up with the Camino path in Uterga.
