By bicycle from Wassenaar to Leiden

A sweet little hop from Wassenaar to Leiden, about 10 km and almost entirely on dedicated cycle paths. Expect smooth riding on mostly asphalt with a few stretches of paving stones, and only the gentlest of rises—nothing your legs will notice.

Roll out from leafy Wassenaar, known for its dunes, estates, and the Duinrell park, and thread past green spaces toward the historic university city of Leiden. The route sticks largely to separated cycleways with just a few quiet streets, making it relaxed and beginner-friendly.

Leiden welcomes you with canals, hofjes (hidden courtyards), and Molen de Valk, the iconic windmill museum. It’s also home to the Netherlands’ oldest university (founded in 1575) and the Hortus Botanicus, one of the world’s oldest botanical gardens—perfect for a post-ride wander.

Tip: bring a lock and plan a coffee stop by the water in Leiden’s center. This is a flat, easy ride with city and nature vibes in one go.
