Cycling day trip from Abtenau to Bad Goisern am Hallstättersee

Roll out from Abtenau, the relaxed market town in the Tennengau, and ease into the Lammertal on quiet roads and cycleways. You’ll wind past meadows and farmhouses toward Annaberg and into the Gosau valley, with the Dachstein massif popping in and out of view. Expect steady rollers and a couple of honest climbs, then a long, rewarding descent as you angle toward Hallstättersee.

It’s a big day: about 117 km with roughly 2,000 m of climbing and a net drop to the lake. Surfaces are mostly smooth (mainly asphalt) with a few short gravel connectors—nothing a regular road/gravel setup can’t handle. Fuel stops are easy in Annaberg or Gosau; a detour to Gosausee is a scenic bonus if you’ve got the legs.

Finish in Bad Goisern am Hallstättersee, gateway to the Salzkammergut and home of the legendary Salzkammergut Trophy MTB marathon. Cool down along the lakeside, grab a coffee or strudel, and, if it’s warm, take a quick dip in the crystal-clear water. Perfect mountain-to-lake ride vibes.
