Quick ride by bicycle from Kelheim to Essing

This ride is a super scenic, relaxed spin from Kelheim to Essing—perfect if you want a bit of off-the-beaten-track adventure. Starting in Kelheim, a historic town at the confluence of the Altmühl and Danube rivers, you’ll roll out on a mix of quiet roads and shady paths (expect lots of gravel and some unpaved sections, so bring wider tires if you can).

As you wind your way along the Altmühl river, the route is mostly flat with just a hint of climbing—nothing you can’t handle. The landscape here is all about limestone cliffs, forest patches, and the occasional castle peeking through the trees.

Essing greets you at the end with its famous wooden bridge (one of Europe’s longest!) and picture-perfect houses hugging the riverbank.
