Quick ride by bicycle from Bottrop to Essen

This ride takes you from Bottrop to Essen, weaving through some of the Ruhr region’s greenest patches and lively neighborhoods. You’ll roll out from Bottrop, a former coal-mining city now known for its parks, industrial heritage, and the iconic Tetraeder look-out pyramid. The first half of your 17km trip is mostly on quiet roads and smooth asphalt—easy cruising!

There’s a gentle climb overall, but nothing too strenuous, with a few sections of paving stones and gravel to keep things interesting. About a third of the way in, the route transitions to more scenic paths that dip in and out of small wooded areas. You’ll pass close to Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex as you head into Essen, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a top spot for industrial culture fans.
