Cycling day trip from Rome to Fiumicino

This ride takes you from the heart of ancient Rome all the way to the coastal town of Fiumicino—hello, Tyrrhenian Sea! Starting out from Rome (near the Colosseum!), you’ll wind your way across the city and quickly escape the bustle, with over half the journey following dedicated cycleways. The first part offers glimpses of Rome’s centuries-old sites and lively neighborhoods, before transitioning to quieter suburban roads and open countryside.

Expect mostly paved paths, but there’s a bit of adventure thrown in—about a quarter of the route dips into unpaved or gravelly stretches, so a sturdy hybrid bike is ideal. The ride has a gentle downhill overall (go Rome’s 7 hills!), so coasting to sea level feels natural. After almost 46 km, you’ll coast into Fiumicino, a fishing town famous for fresh seafood and as the site of Rome’s main international airport. Perfect spot to reward yourself with a gelato by the water or, if you’re feeling fancy, a feast of local fish!
