Quick ride by bicycle from Mals to Graun im Vinschgau

Roll out from Mals, a relaxed Val Venosta town known for its Romanesque churches and strong organic-farming vibe. The route heads north on quiet roads and farm tracks, steadily climbing through orchards and alpine meadows. Expect a mostly smooth ride with a few short loose-gravel bits—nothing wild, but wider tires make it comfy.

Pass Burgeis/Burgusio, where a detour up to Marienberg Abbey rewards you with big views (it’s often cited as the highest Benedictine monastery in Europe). From here the scenery opens toward the Reschen Pass. You’ll keep gaining altitude—about 700 meters over roughly 18 km—so settle into an easy rhythm.

Roll into Graun im Vinschgau by Lake Resia, famous for the eerie, photogenic church tower rising out of the water—the remnant of a village submerged when the reservoir was created. At around 1,500 m, it can be breezy and cooler, so pack a layer.
