Cycling day trip from Kotor to Podgorica

Roll out from UNESCO-listed Kotor, tucked into the Bay of Kotor’s fjord-like curves, and settle in for a big mountain day. You’ll climb from sea level up the famous Kotor Serpentine toward Njeguši and the lower slopes of Lovćen—expect long switchbacks, epic bay views, and a max elevation around 1,300 m. Distance is about 85 km with roughly 3,440 m of ascent, so it’s a stout ride.

The route mixes mostly quiet roads with some paths and occasional gravel/track sections—sturdy tires and good brakes pay off. A classic pit stop is Njeguši for pršut and cheese; a short detour toward Lovćen National Park delivers panoramic lookouts. Rolling past the old royal capital of Cetinje adds a dose of history before the final run to Podgorica.

Finish in Montenegro’s laid-back capital on the Morača River—grab a coffee near Independence Square or stroll to the Millennium Bridge. Big climbs, big views, and a very Montenegrin blend of coast, karst, and city. Bring water, layers, and daylight—it’s a full-value ride.
