Historische Ostedeichroute

The historic Ostedeichroute leads you to numerous stations with information panels where you can discover the historical connection of the residents of Oste with 'their' river. Essentially, it follows the German Ferry Road between Neuhaus and Osten.

The Ostedeichroute is best explored by bike. To shorten the return trip, the train stations Hemmoor and Cadenberge offer good options. The Metronom running on the Cuxhaven - Hamburg route has sufficient bike parking spaces. The easiest way to follow a different route back is to ride along the opposite riverbank on the Ostedeich.

Please note in Neuhaus that the crossing at Poststraße – Amtshof is a pedestrian bridge, so please dismount briefly from your bike. The Deichstraße is a one-way street heading towards Belum. Coming from Geversdorf, it is a nice alternative to follow the Deichstraße all the way to Querstraße instead of going into Schützenstraße.

Worthy detour:

Ostesee between Belum and Neuhaus: At the Neuhauser Deich, cross the stairs over the dike to Ostesee (or follow the street Neuhäuser Deich and signs towards 'Wasserskianlage' to Ostesee).

Ostesperrwerk / Natureum Niederelbe From the Neuhauser Deich, instead of heading towards Neuhaus, go to the Ostesperrwerk from the direction of the Natureum.

Geversdorf Neuenschleuse To the right of the Oste, a bit away from the rest of the historic Ostedeichroute, lies the former port of Neuenschleuse with an information station.

Oberndorf In Oberndorf Bentwisch, the Hasenfleet dairy offers groups the opportunity for tours and to experience the humorous 'Milchmagister'.

Osten Definitely cross once with the suspension ferry. On the other side awaits you the info mile of the world's suspension ferries.

The route is suitable for car travelers, with few exceptions.

Neuhaus

It is best to park in Neuhaus and explore the sights on foot.

The transition at Poststraße - Amtshof is a pedestrian bridge: follow the vehicles on Poststraße until the intersection with Amtshof near the Kreisparkasse.

The Deichstraße is a one-way street towards Belum. Coming from Geversdorf, it is a nice alternative to follow the Deichstraße to Querstraße instead of going into Schützenstraße.

Geversdorf: Bürgermeister-Wilke-Straße is closed to vehicles. Follow the main road towards Oberndorf and turn into Cadenberger Weg by the church.

Oberndorf: The dike path in Oberndorf is closed to vehicles. It’s best to park near the church and explore the path in the village on foot. The information panels are very close together.

Osten: The suspension ferry operates according to schedule and is only available for cyclists and pedestrians.
