Kyll-Radweg - Kyll-Radweg

A cycling route starting in Scheid, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.

Overview

About this route

Stretching across the Eifel region, the Kyll Cycle Path (Kyll-Radweg) runs from Losheimergraben (ideal starting point with public transport: Dahlem train station) to Germany's oldest city, Trier. You can easily get back to the starting point (Dahlem), as the Cologne-Trier railway line accompanies the route throughout your ride. Following the Kyll River, the long-distance cycle route winds past many castles and through the Eifel's varied landscapes: at the beginning, you pass through the North Eifel with its reservoirs and lakes, such as the Kronenburger See. The route then leads through the volcanic Eifel — shaped by raw natural forces — and continues into the South Eifel with its typical orchards and the craggy rock formations of the Bitburger Gutland. Newly opened: since May 2015, the section between Jünkerath and Losheimergraben uses a former railway line. From Losheimergraben, the RAVel Cycle Path L45a to Weywertz (also a former railway line) gives you access to the Vennbahn Cycle Path, heading north via Monschau to Aachen or south via St. Vith to Troisvierges/Luxembourg. Route highlights:- Kronenburger See- Kronenburg- Iron Museum Jünkerath- Historic water mill Birgel- Medieval town fortifications in Hillesheim- Church of the Redeemer/Gerolstein- Löwenburg/Gerolstein- Natural history museum/Gerolstein- Geopark Gerolstein- Kasselburg Castle near Pelm- Bertrada Castle in Mürlenbach- St. Thomas Monastery- Collegiate church in Kyllburg and Malberg Castle- Speicher local museum- Potter village Speicher- Roman villa Otrang- Eifelpark Gondorf  Alternative and additional routes: The 22-kilometre Kalkeifel Cycle Path is a real insider tip. It leads from Hillesheim to Ahrdorf, connecting the Kyll Cycle Path with the Ahr Cycle Path. The route crosses the watershed dividing the Rhine and Moselle river systems, allowing for longer round trips or cross-region cycling in the Eifel/Ahr/Rhine/Moselle area. The Kalkeifel Cycle Path mainly follows the former railway track and is nearly flat, apart from a short ascent out of Hillesheim. The Kyll Cycle Path is the most important north-south cycling connection through the Eifel and links up with several other routes: Stadtkyll (Prüm Cycle Path), Bolsdorf-Hillesheim (Kalkeifel Cycle Path), Gerolstein (Eifel-Ardennes Cycle Path), Bitburg-Erdorf (Nims Cycle Path), Trier-Ehrang (Moselle Cycle Path).  Bicycle-friendly accommodation: Planning an overnight stay? Whether in a hotel, guest house, private room, holiday apartment or cottage in the Eifel, you can conveniently search and book bike-friendly accommodation along the route through Eifel Tourismus GmbH according to your wishes, also online.
