Fietsroute langs de historische Grebbelinie

Start the cycling route at TOP Fort aan de Buursteeg. Besides parking and catering facilities, you will also find the Grebbelinie Visitor Centre here. Get acquainted with the centuries-old military history of the line in the exhibition space before embarking on your own discovery tour along the line.The Grebbelinie was originally a waterline that ran from the Lower Rhine at the Grebbeberg, via Veenendaal and Amersfoort to Spakenburg. This chain of forts and line dikes formed the main defense of the Netherlands for more than two hundred years. The line was flooded to deter the enemy. Quartering, inundations, evacuations, and battles have left countless traces and stories that are still visible in the picturesque towns along the line. Old locks, concrete casemates, tank barriers, and German bunkers provide a glimpse into more than two centuries of national defense. During the cycling route, you will discover the traces hidden in the landscape.From the fort, the route takes you through beautiful Renswoude, situated in the midst of a quintessential Dutch landscape on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. You cycle past the special and imposing Castle Renswoude with its beautiful park. The whitewashed rear gives the building a true country estate look, while the front with its towers is more reminiscent of a castle. Continue along to the Pyramid of Austerlitz in Woudenberg. This was built in 1804 as a tribute to Napoleon Bonaparte.
