De Rijn ontspringt in Zwitserland bij Graubünden, en neemt nogal eens regen en smeltwater mee op zijn reis door ons land. Vandaar dat de uiterwaarden van de rivier zorgen voor een extra breed stroombed. Deze fietsroute is daarom vooral spectaculair bij hoog water, alhoewel de oevers van de rivier ook bij laag water de moeite waard zijn.
