The tower of Kobdilj is part of the defensive fortifications around the medieval village of Štanjel. In fact, the tower marks the second entrance into the village and it guarded access to the town from the direction of the Vipava valley.I did not find any data if the tower was ever used for the defence of the village in medieval times, but I know that it recived its present forn after the WW1. In the 1930s this part of Slovenia was part of the Kingdom of Italy. Dr. Enrico Ferrari, who was at the time a doctor in Trieste, bought several houses in Štanjel, because he really liked the place. He also bought a house near the tower, which became part of his property known as "Vila Ferrari". Dr. Ferrari decided to renovate the tower and the work was carried out by his friend and relativr, Maks Fabiani, a native from the nearby village of Kobdilj. Fabiani, who was a very renowned architect, converted the tower into a summer dining room of the Vila Ferrari with a beautiful terrace at the top. The tower was badly damaged during the WW2 in 1944 and renovated again after the war. Nowadays it is open for the visitors who can climb the stairs up to the terrace. I absolutly recommend the visit, which is free of charge and also the climb to the top. Please, be careful, because the wooden steps are aomehow narrow and steep. So caution is advised, but the climb is worth all the effort. The view of the surrounding area is beautiful
