Overview

About this route

This is a light and pleasant route along the border between the Malesevska and Vlahina mountains. Technically speaking, most of it falls in the Vlahina, if that has any significance at all. More important are other things – for instance, the classic views of Pirin in the area and the visit to one of the biggest local natural attractions – the Komatinski Rocks. It is difficult to determine the appropriate user group for this route. Overall, from a physical effort standpoint, it is rather light and enjoyable. The ascent is almost entirely on asphalt – this might even be annoying for some, but it is one of the smoothest you could wish for. The descent is mostly easy as well, but quite varied and surprisingly so in some places. We can conditionally divide it into three parts. First, from the Komatinski Rocks through the scattered village of Brestovo, one rides on a road so old and neglected that we can practically define it as a wide path that is, in some places, overgrown. Then we join a clearer path with ruts and occasional climbs, briefly get back on asphalt, and continue on a nice and flat path that follows the ridge north of the village of Sushica and the valley of the Sushica River. The third part is a trail leading to the village of Polena. In general, talking about easier paths in this area is very conditional, but this one is among the easier ones. However, that does not mean that at 2-3 spots you won’t have to make maximum use of your riding technique or get off the bike for safety. Still, these sections are relatively short, not more than 200-300 m in total, but the path isn’t particularly long either. In this sense, the ride is not suitable for complete beginners unless they are willing to push a little downhill. Intermediate riders may encounter some difficulties, but they will manage and finish with a smile and warm brakes. And for lovers of technical paths, it might even seem a bit short. Generally, in the summer months, temperatures are high, and riding this route is not recommended, but on rainy and cooler days it is entirely possible to use it as an option, although the old way through Brestovo's hamlets is not without mud and flowing water. However, the best seasons to ride it are spring and autumn, including the border months with winter. Important! As this is a border area, it is mandatory to carry an ID card, and it is even better to call ahead to the Border Police and inform them of your presence.
