Overview

About this route

1

East of the Haßberge, in the triangle between Baunach, Ebern and Untermerzbach, two small rivers uniquely shape the landscape. They meander through their valleys, bordered by shady trees, lively crossing meadows and fields. Here they are still allowed to be rivers. Sometimes bending left, sometimes making a loop to the right. In spring, they may even flood a meadow, providing a rich midday feast for storks. The Baunach valley and the Itzgrund are landscapes as they should be. And as if these weren t already enough reasons for a relaxed bike tour, numerous breweries and gastronomy businesses enhance this natural idyll with the full range of Upper Franconian culinary culture. A tour that will often make you wonder when will this pleasure finally end! Tour From the tranquil Baunach, follow the course of the Baunach northwards. At Reckendorf, the route meets the first ambassadors of enjoyment and then shortly turns east to lead leisurely and with low traffic through the Baunach valley to Ebern. The idyllic fields and meadows around the Baunach always in view. A particularly beautiful scene unfolds just behind Treinfeld, as Schloss Rentweinsdorf skillfully integrates into the gentle natural backdrop on the left. After riding through the historic old town of Ebern, characterized by splendid half-timbered houses, it s time to cross into the Itzgrund. Just over 100 meters of elevation take you up to Bretzenstein, from whose summit you enjoy a wonderful view of the Itzgrund and the upper Main valley including Staffelberg and Kloster Banz. So perseverance pays off. Once at the top, you can almost leisurely roll back almost to the starting point. Passing Schloss and park Untermerzbach, proceed directly to the Itz. The picturesque Schenkenau (castle with mill) then gives a first impression of what follows on the rest of the tour southwards: picturesque villages with many half-timbered houses and ever again great views of the lush meadows and fields to the left and right of the Itz. Only interrupted by a near sinful number of idyllic beer gardens and breweries. Behind Rattelsdorf the tour finally passes once more through picturesque nature and crosses both the Itz and Baunach again back to the namesake starting point Baunach. Note Haßberge Tourismus e.V. explicitly supports responsible beer consumption and thus also the campaign by the Deutscher Brauer Bund 'Bier bewusst geniessen' (Enjoy beer consciously). Because enjoyment means a special taste experience for which you consciously take time. The campaign s aim is to promote responsible beer enjoyment and to inform about when, how and how much to drink. It consciously points to specific life situations where alcohol must not be consumed: in road traffic, during hazardous work, while pregnant and breastfeeding, as well as below a certain age limit. Tips and further information Starting point The tour starts at the market square of Baunach. Since it is a circular tour, you can of course join anywhere along the route. Refreshments Stops are possible in Reckendorf, Ebern, Untermerzbach, Kaltenbrunn, Hemmendorf, Mürsbach, Freudeneck, Höfen and Rattelsdorf.
