Experience the era of the 'Iron Curtain' - to prevent forgetting. The Elbtalaue-Wendland biosphere region was once a border area. The internal German division was omnipresent for far too long. It not only separated landscapes, towns, and villages but also many families and friends. Even today, numerous remnants from that time, such as border fences and towers or the former border crossing at Bergen an der Dumme, are visible. But border protection was also unplanned nature conservation. Along the former 'death strip,' a strip of valuable landscapes developed where endangered animal and plant species found a protected habitat. Today, the 'Green Belt' is the longest cross-border biotope network in Germany.
