Staniątki koło Niepołomic to wieś, w której – według przekazów – zatrzymał się św. Wojciech “na staniątki”, czyli postój w drodze na dwór Bolesława Chrobrego. W latach 1228-1238 przedstawiciele możnego, małopolskiego rodu Gryfitów ufundowali tu kościół i klasztor sióstr benedyktynek . Pochodzący z końca XIII wieku kościół jest najwcześniejszym w Polsce przykładem halowej, gotyckiej budowli sakralnej. W klasztorze przechowywane są bogate zbiory sztuki i rzemiosła artystycznego: inkunabuły, paramenty liturgiczne, zbiór portretów ksień klasztoru oraz ciekawe przykłady malarstwa na szkle. Do najcenniejszych skarbów klasztoru należą dwie XIV-wieczne rzeźby tronujących Madonn oraz późnogotycka rzeźba Chrystusa Frasobliwego. Staniątki są również sanktuarium maryjnym – od stuleci czczony jest tu cudowny obraz Matki Bożej Bolesnej.
