June 19: Nantes-Brest Canal
In the morning, we first head to Josselin, where we find the Nantes-Brest Canal. Napoleon had the river dug into a canal for military use.
The canal is lined with a path suitable for cycling, used by lock keepers to move from one lock to another. It serves well as a bike path because the road is fairly smooth and runs constantly along the canal's edge.
We pedal 'upstream' far enough to reach the first lock that lowers in the opposite direction. The journey is imperceptible, a very gentle uphill. The return trip must be made the same way, since the path runs only on one side of the canal.
The scenery is lush and quiet. The birdsong is the dominant sound, except for occasional road intersections. Very peaceful and verdant.
