Overview
About this route
Kocába – The 45 km long river made its mark in the history of tramping right after World War I, when it began to be visited by lovers of the Wild West, who dubbed Kocába the 'Snake River'. Since the 1930s of this century, hundreds of little cabins and old tramping settlements like Ascalona, Dashwood, Kansas, Loussiana, etc. have revived the rocky canyon. On this route, you will traverse a large part of the most beautiful section of Kocába, which lies between Nový Knín and Štěchovice.A little guide to the route:From Mníšek, go along the blue tourist trail down the forest path, or on the asphalt of bike route no. 8130 towards Chouzavá. Along the way, you will pass by the excursion restaurant Malá Sv. Hora. It was previously a pilgrimage site. Here stands the chapel of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary from 1809-1810 and a baroque cross. From here, continue along the green bike trail to Chouzavá. Here, turn right and follow the yellow tourist trail to Voznice. At the village square by the pond, a pleasant restaurant with an outdoor terrace awaits you. If you prefer to snack from your own supplies, you can continue a little further, still on the yellow trail up to Králova Stolička. On a small hill, in the middle of an 18th-century game preserve, there is a gazebo from which six paths radiate out. However, the yellow tourist trail heading to Stará Huť will safely lead you out of this labyrinth of paths. The name of this settlement may be derived from a smelter for processing iron ore that was in operation from 1650 until 1926. A little further past the village, along bike route no. 308 (blue tourist trail), you will reach the pond Strž. There is a natural swimming area here and under the dam of the pond stands an empire-style house that serves as a memorial to Karel Čapek. Here the writer lived during the last three years of his life. The exhibition is also dedicated to the personality of his wife, actress and writer Olga Scheinpflugová. In the attic of the house, journalist and writer Ferdinand Peroutka has a separate exhibition. Continue along bike route no. 308 (blue tourist trail) along forest paths until you come out onto an asphalt road. On it, turn left and after about 3 km, you will arrive in Nový Knín. In Nový Knín you will find many attractions. In the main square, there are baroque houses and a neoclassical fountain from 1792, and the two-storey town hall no. 1 is from the 17th century. The mint no. 47 from 1801 is currently used as a museum of mining and processing gold in the area of Nový Knín and as a museum of the town. The next direction of the route will be determined by the green tourist trail, which right after Knín will lead you to the picturesque corners of the Kocába river. The path may be technically challenging for some. There are no hills here, but the path is sometimes narrow and crosses Kocába several times on natural footbridges. It is definitely worth it. Civilization will only remind you briefly with the passage through Velká and Malá Lečice, but then you will dive back into the valley of Kocába. At the fork near Fafkův mill, you will say goodbye to Kocába and turn left along the blue tourist trail in the direction of Bratřínov. But if you still have enough strength and would like to accompany Kocába until its confluence with the Vltava at Štěchovice (it's still about 6 km), old tramping settlements await you here, whose names recall the Wild West. All of this is framed by the towering rocky cliffs along the banks of Kocába. The journey back and forth will surely be worth it. From Fafkův mill, the blue tourist trail will lead you through Bratřínov to the fork of Svatý Václav. Here, at the junction of forest paths, stands a monument from 1938 with a depiction of St. Wenceslaus. The back of the monument bears the inscription: This monument stands in the middle of forests, which in 1908 were gifted by Prince Josef Colloredo-Mansfeld to the sanatorium Na Pleši. It was built in 1938 by Doc. MUDr. Svatopluk Basař in eternal memory of the patron.
