Fietsroute met uitzicht op Hompelvoet

The Grevelingenmeer is a special water area; it is the largest saltwater lake in the Netherlands. The lake's clarity makes it very popular among sport divers. Also, the unique island of Hompelvoet lies in the middle of the Grevelingenmeer. In the early 1970s, the island grew from a sandbank to an open plain where an enormous richness of plants developed. Two of the plant species that you almost only find on Hompelvoet are the white Parnassia – a white star-shaped wildflower – and the autumn screw orchid – an orchid with small white flowers that coil around their own stem like a screw thread. This orchid is rare, but the largest population in the world grows on Hompelvoet. From the end of August, they bloom by the thousands simultaneously. The Parnassia also blooms from July to September. The white sea of flowers is a magnificent sight. The rugged vegetation makes the island attractive for many butterflies and birds, such as the common tern, the lapwing, and the black-tailed godwit. A herd of Fjord horses grazes there all year round. In the summer months, from May to November, cattle graze on the island. Hompelvoet is therefore a real recommendation to visit. You can moor there by boat for a beautiful walk. However, be mindful of the bird breeding season. Between March 15 and August 15, the island of Hompelvoet is closed to visitors because of the breeding season of several bird species. A bird warden guards the island during this period, so the birds can nest and raise their young in peace. The cycling route also takes you to the charming Ouddorp. Taste fresh fish at the fish shop or visit the goats at the goat farm just outside Ouddorp, where you can also enjoy a nice cup of coffee. Relaxing on the bike is what this route does for you. Because the route is not too long, it is the ideal trip for a day out during your holiday in South Holland. Get some fresh air between the dunes, enjoy nature, and everything you encounter along the way. Also very fun to cycle with children! The stop-off points make it a pleasant outing for the whole family.
