The former mayor of Glückstadt, Dr. Manfred Bruhn, developed the idea of commercially promoting the "silver of the sea". In 1968, thanks to his initiative, the first Glückstadt Matjes Weeks were celebrated. At his suggestion, master fisherman Helmut Sievers took over the production and marketing of the Glückstadt specialty in 1976 after the herring fishery in Glückstadt ceased.Every third Thursday in June, thousands of visitors and journalists eagerly await the moment when the mayor takes a bite of the new Matjes. With this "Matjes bite", the new Matjes season is officially opened.

Afterwards, there will be a four-day celebration throughout the entire downtown area with a flea market and children's area, handicrafts, maritime art and culture, Open-Ship and Matjes in all its variety. Numerous live bands create a lively atmosphere.
