The starting point of this 50-kilometer circular tour, which leads to the visit of two thermal baths with lush wellness landscapes, is the historically impressive market square of Bad Rodach. Initially, the route goes over a small climb followed by a rapid descent into the spa town of Bad Colberg. Well aware that there are still over 40 km ahead, we allow our body a first stop at the thermal baths with their imposing glass facade. But beware: the terrace pool with its 11 basins, steam grotto, brine pool, and much more makes it difficult to set off again. Ahead lies pure medieval charm. With Ummerstadt we reach a place that seems hardly to have changed in 400 years. In the half-timbered village of Gemünda, a detour branches off to Sesslach. This nearly unchanged town may be smaller than Rothenburg o.d. Tauber but is at least as romantic—and above all, not overrun by mass tourism. Through lush green river meadows, pastures, and fields, we continue to the next medieval picture-book town, Heldburg, crowned by a fortress housing the German Castle Museum. After a climb and descent over the summit of an extinct volcano, we roll back into Bad Rodach. There, we grant our body a second visit to the thermal baths at ThermeNatur… with a massage for our somewhat tired legs.
