The area around Coburg is not only a treasure trove for nature lovers but also rich in historical evidence. On this athletic tour, both come together for an exhilarating day trip. The starting point is Coburg. The lively downtown area, with its monuments, citizens' houses, shops, and cafés, is always worth a cozy stroll. Tip: Plan this tour for a Saturday, as there is a weekly and producers' market – the selection of regional cheese and sausage specialties for the picnic is enormous. With all the delicacies in tow, the path first leads to the baroque palace in Tambach, next to which lies a 50-hectare wildlife park. There live red deer and wild boar, moose and peacocks, and around 50 other species almost as free as in nature. Special attraction: The bird of prey show (daily, 10:30 AM and 3:00 PM). Further on, we go through lush green flood meadows to the small town of Seßlach. For 400 years, not much has changed behind its three city gates, which are closed to cars on weekends – pure medieval charm! On the 13-kilometer return to Coburg, the landscape shows a completely new face. It becomes hilly – and therefore it will soon be time to take advantage of one of the many viewpoints along the route for the well-deserved picnic. You should not miss the farm turned museum 'Alte Schäferei' in Ahorn, complete with a rustic inn and shaded beer garden.
