Gifhorn und die Büttelei

A family-friendly route through the southern district of Gifhorn. It goes from place to place. In popular parlance, this area between the Aller and Oker is also referred to as 'Büttelei', as many place names (18 times) end with 'büttel'. The old settlement word 'bodal', later 'büttel', means house and yard. The preceding word, such as 'Rolfs' in Rolfsbüttel, traces back to the name of the first settler in the 10th century.<br />Two great museums are on the way. In Gifhorn, there's the windmill museum, which is more of an experience park than a silent museum, and the privately operated cinema museum in Vollbüttel. On hot summer days, a refreshing swim in the Tankumsee can be enjoyed in between. The trip there is also worthwhile in other seasons. How many thousands of years the area has been settled may perhaps be told by the great megalithic tomb at Rühen.
