Fulda Radweg R1

The nearly 300 km long Fulda Cycle Path ('Hessian Long-Distance Cycle Route R1') follows the course of the Fulda River from its source at the Wasserkuppe to Hannoversch Münden, where the Fulda and Werra merge to form the Weser, and then follows the Weser to the Hessian/North Rhine-Westphalian border at Bad Karlshafen. The cycling route is recommended from Gersfeld in the Rhön region for inexperienced riders and families as well; it is mostly unsuitable for racing bikes. The flattest and thus most family-friendly sections are Gersfeld – Fulda and Kassel – Hannoversch Münden. On the rest of the route, there are some hills, although the R1 is a river cycle path. The path is well developed and 85% asphalted. The remainder is mostly on well-ridable gravel paths. Signage is continuously available in both directions. The route is almost entirely car-free. Occasionally, lightly to moderately trafficked village throughways are also used. The most suitable bike for the route is a touring bike with mountain-capable gearing.
