The Ruhr Valley Cycle Path is a 230 km long cycle path along the Ruhr from its source at Ruhrkopf near Winterberg to its mouth at Duisburg-Ruhrort. On a predominantly riverside cycle path that is mostly car-free, it runs through the towns of Winterberg, Olsberg, Bestwig, Meschede, Arnsberg, Wickede, Fröndenberg, Menden (Sauerland), Iserlohn, Schwerte, Dortmund, Herdecke, Wetter, Witten, Bochum, Hattingen, Essen, Mülheim an der Ruhr, Oberhausen, and Duisburg. On the edges, the places Dortmund, Bochum, and Oberhausen are touched. Cyclists experience both forest-rich low mountain landscapes and river-adjacent cultural landscapes as well as the industrial cultural landscape of the Ruhr metropolis. The most scenic routes for cyclists are from Winterberg to Bestwig and from Schwerte via Hattingen to Mülheim.
