The Emsradweg is a long-distance cycling route in North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony, covering a distance of 379 kilometers from the sources of the Ems river between Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock and Hövelhof to its mouth at Emden into the North Sea. It runs largely in close proximity to the Ems. Typically, the route follows paved secondary roads or cycle paths away from busy roads. The route is very diverse: fields, forests, meadows, and towns alternate. The Emsradweg crosses a total of five holiday regions. The Teutoburg Forest offers good viewpoints with its hill chains; in Münsterland, the path follows the Ems floodplains, and the northern part with the Emsland and East Frisia impresses with the vastness of the landscape and maritime flair. In southern Emsland, the Ems winds its way through moor and heath areas. Just before the town of Lingen (Ems), the three waterways Ems, Dortmund-Ems Canal, and Ems-Vechte Canal intersect. Beyond Papenburg, the Ems is subject to the influence of the North Sea's ebb and flow. There, it can happen that the Ems suddenly flows "the wrong way." Those who continue beyond Emden to the coast (around Campen) can recognize the transition from the Ems to the North Sea by the riverside vegetation (algae, etc.).
