Puerto Tarna/SeƱales - Puerto San Isidro - La Colladona
A cycling route starting in Pola de Laviana, Principality of Asturias, Spain.
Overview
About this route
This is a circular stage where we will climb 3 passes, 2 of which are first category. We will start from Pola de Laviana to ascend the Tarna pass. It is a Tour-type pass, meaning it is a long pass but with manageable gradients; it is advisable to take this first part slowly since from the start to the end of the pass, it is 50 km of continuous ascent. The pass itself consists of 18 km with an average gradient of 5.4%. The hairpin curves near the summit and the tunnel that cuts through the rock are especially beautiful. At the top of the Tarna pass is the Fonte la Nalona, where the Nalón river springs. Once we summit the Señales (continuation of Tarna), we will begin the descent to Puebla de Lillo along a road with not very good surface, where we will take the detour to the ski resort of San Isidro. The ascent consists of 14 km, and in just 6 km, we slightly exceed a 4% gradient. The biggest drawback on this ascent is the headwind, which is common; so if it is strong, it can make the climb tougher. Once we reach the village of La Raya, the border between Asturias and León, a dizzying descent of about 30 km will begin until we reach Cabañaquinta where we will turn right to ascend the Colladona. The Colladona is a short pass of about 6 km in ascent with a constant gradient of 7.4%, which alone would not offer much difficulty but becomes quite tough with the accumulated mileage. This pass separates the municipalities of Aller and Laviana. Finally, we will descend back to the starting point to close a great day of cycling.
