Radausflug nach Tangermünde

The bike trip starts at Hämerten station on the RB 34 Rathenow Stendal line. After only 8 km, Tangermünde is reached. Tangermünde was the German residence of Emperor Charles IV, who is commemorated in Prague by Charles University and Charles Bridge, and later the first capital of the Mark. When you look at the Elbe from the Kaiserpfalz, you can understand the preference of Charles IV and the margraves. Charles IV had only 5 years of life to shape Tangermünde. The Hohenzollern margraves could only hold on to rebellious Tangermünde for 70 years. In 1488, an increase in the beer tax led to a rebellion by the people of Tangermünde. After the Kaiserpfalz was bombarded with cannons from the city, the Hohenzollerns retreated to the initially more peaceful Berlin-Cölln.

Tangermünde is rich in architectural sights, especially Brick Gothic.

The city gates and towers are partly richly decorated with ornamentation. The show facade of the town hall is by Master Hinrich Brunsberg. St. Stephan is one of the most beautiful churches of Brick Gothic. It has an organ by Hans Scherer the Younger, which attracts organists from all over the world. On Saturdays there is 30 minutes of organ music. The pulpit is by Christoph Dehne. There is much more to discover in St. Stephan and, of course, in Tangermünde.

The following 50 km after Tangermünde are by no means boring. Immediately south of Tangermünde is an old arm of the Elbe, the Bolsdorfer Haken, a paradise for waterfowl. On the bike trip, you will experience more old arms of the Elbe.

The next village, Buch, has an unusually large church. Buch was planned as a town but could not compete with nearby Tangermünde. Worth seeing in Buch is an open-air exhibition of apple trees, whose apples are now only found in rural regions. In the following kilometers, you often cycle past old apple trees.

In each of the villages up to the ferry in Rogätz, there are sights to discover. I learned this bike trip in 2013 and was enthusiastic about the landscape, the villages and, of course, Tangermünde.
