About this route

4

During the GDR era, the Elbe Lateral Canal was constructed to connect the Elbe and Mittelland Canal and to stop a potential tank attack. Today, this waterway is an important trade route on which over 80,000 containers are transported annually. The Uelzen lock group is one of the largest and most impressive lock structures in Germany (guided tour appointments: Tel. 05824/3539 or 05825/1843). Mostly small local connecting roads are used, partly also forest and sandy soil paths.
