Ems-Radweg

The Emsradweg is a long-distance cycling route in North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony that runs for 379 kilometers from the sources of the Ems between Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock and Hövelhof to its mouth near Emden into the North Sea. It largely follows the immediate vicinity of the Ems. Typically, the route runs along paved secondary roads or cycle paths away from traffic roads. The route is very varied: fields, forests, meadows, and towns alternate. In total, the Emsradweg crosses five holiday regions. The Teutoburg Forest offers good viewpoints with its hill chains; in Münsterland, the path goes through the Ems floodplains, and the northern part with the Emsland and East Frisia impresses with the vastness of the landscape and maritime flair. In southern Emsland, the Ems finds its way through moor and heath areas. Shortly before the town of Lingen (Ems), the three waterways Ems, Dortmund-Ems Canal, and Ems-Vechte Canal intersect. Beyond Papenburg, the Ems is subject to the influence of the tides of the North Sea. It can happen there that the Ems suddenly flows 'backwards.' Those who ride beyond Emden to the coast (around the height of Campen) can recognize the transition from the Ems to the North Sea by the riparian vegetation (algae, etc.).
