Capileira - Veleta

A tough climb that takes us from the granadine Alpujarra to the summit of Veleta; most of the route runs through high mountains, which translates to a treeless landscape, rocky terrain, and reduced oxygen levels.

The climb begins in the village of Capileira, where we will take the road towards Veleta. Soon a dirt path will begin among the trees, those trees will disappear revealing a terrain eroded by the harshness of winter.

A landmark on the way can be the viewpoint of Trevélez, halfway, which is located just before a fence that blocks vehicle access.

After, we will pass by the lagoon and the refuge of Caldera. We will have a few hundred meters of downhill, to then begin the hardest stretch that ends when we round the mountain. At that moment we will pass by the refuge of Carihuela and will merge onto the road coming from the ski station. These last kilometers we will make on the side of the Veleta that faces the station.

Recommendations: It is only advisable to do this from mid-June to early September.

Bring food and warm clothing.

Avoid doing it when the weather forecast is for cold, clouds, or rain, as it can turn into a hell even in summer.
