About this route

2

This cycling tour showcases some of the most beautiful views of Emden. We start at the train station square. Already here, we are greeted by a picture of diversity; a few meters ahead of us is a freight locomotive 043 903-4, originally coal-fired, behind it rises the dome of the water tower. Here begins our entry point just behind the water tower. We ride towards the Kunsthalle Emden. The Kunsthalle displays, in addition to many temporary exhibitions, the Henri Nannen collection and Otto van de Loo's donation featuring works of classic modernity and contemporary art. Continuing on, we traverse the city ramparts, originally with 10 dog kennels, a fortress never conquered by the city until the Kesselschleuse. The Emder Kesselschleuse is Europe’s only 4-chamber lock. It connects 4 canals and represents a unique monument in the field of hydraulic engineering, under monument protection. We cross the Kesselschleuse, pass the 'Van Ameren Bad' and the youth hostel, and follow the signs for the 'Dollard-Route - Alternative Route'. At the Ems Side Canal, we proceed straight on the Wykhoffweg, turning left onto Kiefernweg until we reach Schöpfwerkstraße and cross the Borssumer Siel. Here one can plan a small detour to the Ökowerk. We continue along the road, directly along the dyke, and see the Nearshore wind energy facility by Enercon to our left. What is special about this facility is not only its location in the water but also the fact that its tower, unlike installations of this size, is not made of concrete but of steel. Through the Large Sea Lock and the Nesserlander Lock, we reach the outer harbor. Here we encounter ferry connections to Borkum and on certain days also to Delfzijl or Ditzum. We cross the dike cut and follow Nesserlanderstraße, from where we can view the shipyards and individual harbor sections to our right. At Hansastraße, we cross the railway line to the right and pass over the railway bridge, then turn into 'Herring Fishing' street. Here you have a beautiful view over the Old Inner Harbor. Proceeding to the final sprint over the Faldern Bridge along the East Frisian State Museum, the museum ships, and the Otto Huus back to Emden central station. (cloned from route 363848)
