Altmühl-Radweg

The starting point of the classic routes along the Altmühl Cycle Path is Rothenburg ob der Tauber. The medieval city is one of the most important travel destinations for all culture enthusiasts. Initially, the still young Altmühl meanders through gentle meadows and charming valley floors over the Franconian Lake District. Behind Treuchtlingen, however, the landscape abruptly changes. The river carves deeply into the soft limestone of the Franconian Jura and delights not only nature lovers: 12 mighty dolomite rocks line up like 12 Apostles in a river bend. In Eichstätt, the hearts of culture enthusiasts beat faster: the university town boasts a baroque and cohesive townscape. Then it continues through the winding Altmühltal towards the Danube. Beilngries and Riedenburg with their narrow streets and bold castles compete for the favor of their visitors. In a bend of the Danube, you will finally be greeted by the famous monastery complex of Weltenburg with its even more famous beer garden: culture and nature, beer and baroque in harmony. If the tour along the Altmühl-Radweg were an opera composition, then the boat ride through the wild and romantic Danube gorge near Kelheim would probably be the final act of the performance.
