Elba 2 Cecina nach Volterra

Sunday. In the morning, a quick trip to the weekend market by the sea to shop for the picnic. Then we take side roads through the beach metropolis that is already quite deserted at this time of year. The first climb to Cappuccino in Guardistallo awaits us. At the top of the piazza, we find a great bar amid an impressive architectural ensemble. After that, we ride smoothly and quietly through beautiful Tuscan landscapes. Picnic in Saline di Volterra. In the afternoon, the steep but never too steep ascent to Volterra awaits us. Postcard views along the route, various shades of ochre and a fig tree with ripe fruit occasionally line the roadside. With the destination firmly in sight, this is a very varied and impressive climb. At the top, we encounter one of the prettiest small towns in Italy. We take a look around the old town, admire the Belvedere and the Piazza dei Priori. Perhaps we will take a detour to the Teatro romano or check out the alabaster museum. Whatever happens, in the end we head to our scenic hotel - and that alone would have made it all worth the effort.
