A long slog of a day - mostly out of necessity, for the lack of roads or accommodation options in this part of Scotland.
The route from Penrith to Carlisle is wonderful - long, straight, flat.
However, I can't recommend much of the rest. The road from Gretna Green to Kirtlebridge is fine, but the famed B-road, following the motorway, is poorly surfaced, pretty boring, and shared with logging lorries. Bring lots of food; there are few opportunities to buy it.
After leaving the B7078 through Uddington, the A70 is hellish: narrow, without so much as a verge (let alone cycle lane), and again shared with very fast-moving heavy traffic.
Accommodation in the New Lanark YHA.
