Itinerario 1 - Riserva Naturale

In the varied landscape of the Monti Erei rises the Riserva Rossomanno Grottascura Bellia, one of the great green lungs of the province of Enna and all of Sicily. It consists of sandy and permeable plateaus, entirely covered with conifers.

The area, with peaks located at about 800 meters above sea level, extends over an area of approximately 2011.45 hectares in the territory of Aidone, Valguarnera, and Piazza Armerina. The zone is easily traversable both on foot and by mountain bike.

Established in 2000 with the purpose of conserving and protecting an ancient conifer reforestation, the reserve is characterized by extensive plateaus alternating with slopes entirely covered by sand formed in the Pliocene period. The area is defined as a SIC, site of community importance.

The last stage of the itinerary is characterized by the Enchanted Stones.

The 'Enchanted Stones' or 'Dancing Stones' are particular rock formations with an irregular columnar appearance. They consist of Pliocene quartzarenitic rock associated with submarine turbidite currents, which after lithification and emergence underwent subaerial erosion processes, including aeolian erosion that shaped them. The peculiarity of the site has always aroused various legends among local farmers, who considered them the work of the devil or saw them as joyful dancers petrified by a divine intervention.
